What is Chiropractic?

A History and background from Dr. Joseph Sweere’s book Golden rules for vibrant health in body, mind, and spirit:   a holistic approach to health and wellness.
Sweere, Joseph. Golden rules for vibrant health in body, mind, and spirit:   a holistic approach to health and wellness. NJ:  Basic Health Publ., 2004.

Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by natural healer, David Daniel Palmer. The word chiropractic is derived from the Greek cheiro (hand) and praktikos (to do). From this, you can surmise that chiropractic places significant emphasis on manual means of evaluating and treating the body. At the present time, there are licensed chiropractors in every state in the United States and in over one hundred countries and about 94 percent of all skilled manipulative care in the world is provided by doctors of chiropractic. With approximately 67,000 practicing doctors, chiropractic is the second largest primary healthcare system in the United States, after M.D.s, and there are another 20,000 chiropractors in other countries.

As a holistic, drugless, non-surgical system of healing, chiropractic is based on the premise that inborn wisdom exists in all living organisms, including humans, and regulates all the body’s glands, internal organs, and systems. In chiropractic circles, this wisdom is known as innate intelligence, and the concept is similar to the Latin phrase viz mediacatrix naturae, the healing power of nature, expressed by holistically oriented physicians who practice Western medicine. The  self-regulating, self-healing power is the life force that regulates homeostasis, the natural harmony or balance within the body.

Chiropractic draws on the theory that the nervous system—consisting of the brain, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves, autonomic nervous system, and special sense organs, such as the eyes and ears—controls all of the body’s other organs and structures and relates the body to its environment to maintain homeostasis. According to chiropractic philosophy, there is an intimate relationship between structure and function, and the integrity of the body’s structure must be maintained in order to preserve optimal function. Its major premise is that impairments to the body’s framework, especially in the spine, can cause disturbances in the nervous system, thus affecting nerve energy, or innate intelligence. This interrelating disturbance is known as the subluxation complex. Subluxation refers to an existing disturbance in one or more of the joints of the body, but particularly in the spine, that can interfere with the function of the nervous system.

Chiropractors are skilled in the detection and reduction of the subluxation complex through carefully determined, and specifically directed, manual or mechanical corrective procedures known as chiropractic adjustments. Prior to making the adjustment, the chiropractor performs a wide range of clinical diagnostic and evaluation procedures, including a thorough medical history, a traditional physical examination, a postural and biomechanical assessment, muscle testing, chemical laboratory analysis, x-rays, and other specialized evaluations, as needed. Most chiropractors also provide soft-tissue manipulation, as well as a variety of physical therapies such as heat, cold, light, ultrasound, and electricity. Significant emphasis is also placed on exercise, lifestyle, nutrition, occupational and sports-related concerns, physical fitness, stress management, and stretching.

People who can greatly benefit from chiropractic care are those who are experiencing neuromusculoskeletal disorders, particularly work-related and athletic injuries, including arthritis, back, neck, and extremity pain, repetitive strain, sciatica, or whiplash. Additionally, chiropractic can be helpful in managing headaches, including migraines. Perhaps more surprising, however, is the fact that recent research has documented chiropractic’s efficacy in treating conditions such as asthma, digestive disorders, menstrual problems, and other health distrurbances resulting from the subluxation complex.
